Purpose:
Now that you are in 6th grade, we want to help you be successful in your academic courses.
This site will help you learn Tier 2 vocabulary along through Vocabulary Spell City. This site will help guide you through Vocabulary Spell City and offer more support as you gain understanding of vocabulary during your academic assignments. You will be a detective and find out the basics about the word and then go deeper.
6th Grade Language Arts Common Core Standard:
-Grade 6: L 6.6 Acquire and use accurately grade appropriate general academic and domain specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
-Student NET: Creativity and innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
Objectives: Given 16 words at 6th grade or above level, student will define 4 words correctly 1 out of two trials. Given 16 words at 6th grade or above level, student will use 13 words correctly in context, either sentences or paragraph form, with 80% accuracy.
UNITS:
There are four units that will be covered in a month. More units will be added as the year progresses with a minimum of four words a week.
Unit 1 : area, derive, distribute, deprive
Unit 2: authority, benefit, constitute, individual
Unit 3: analyze, available, define, establish
Unit 4: approach, assume, concept, consist
Requirements:
1. Vocabulary Spell City
site is used daily. You can track your progress and I can see if you need help.
This video will walk you through the site.
The site will help you define words and provide games to practice word definition and to use in context.
The Notebook and Power Point will take through the steps in case you need more information. Watch the NB version.
2. Frayer Model
A graphic organizer to be completed per word.
Template with directions that is online. Frayer Model Template that you can download and fill in to send in by email
1. You will complete the practice quizzes and final quiz on each Unit. 5 pts each X 2 = 10 pts for completion with 100%
2. Frayer Model graphic organizers are done for each word. 3 pts each X 17 words = 51 pts
3. Assignments, at least 3 per unit, are completed 5 pts each X 3 = 15 pts 100% complete
4. Final project 20 pts = 20 pts
5. Participate in at least 2 out of 4 discussion 2 pts each X 2 = 4 pts
A= 95-100 B=87-94 C=77-93 D= 68-76
